Naming is the marketing activity of devising the most suitable name for a brand.

This decision begins with a thorough analysis of the target industry, competition, target audience, and socio-cultural context. The research phase is followed by the choice of a name that evokes the brand identity and is easily understood and memorized. For the naming to be successful, the sound, clarity and uniqueness of the name are crucial. It must stand out from that of competitors, so it must be original and unique. It is also important that it is easily pronounced and understandable phonetically, which facilitates memorization.

Very often a wrong naming, negatively affects the promotion and sale of good products: a famous case was in 2010 with Apple christening its tablet "iPad," where "pad" in English means sanitary pad. Obviously such a colossal brand is not affected much, while for a fledgling and little-known company such a choice could lead to considerable damage. So beware of naming!
